Peter Leko - Viswanathan Anand

World Chess Championship
Round 6
Mexico City

2007.09.19

Leader Anand is playing Leko, who is still unable to win in the tournament. After his beautiful victory over Svidler yesterday, Vishy will try to extend his lead, despite the black pieces.

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O b5 6.Bb3 Bc5 No Marshall today, this sharp variation may lead to a more atractive game.

7.c3 d6 8.a4 Rb8 9.d4 Bb6 10.Na3 O-O 11.axb5 axb5 12.Nxb5 Bg4 This position has been seen at Top level before. Black has compensation for the sacrificed pawn because the white center is under heavy pressure. Many moves have been tried here for white with different success.

13.Be3 exd4 14.cxd4 Nxe4 Leko has to chose between Bd5, Qc2 and h3. The unprotected black knights give white a small advantage.

15.Qc2 Qe8 16.Ba4 Bd7 is best here

16... Bd7 Nc3 followed by Rfe1 is Leko's best chance

17.Rfe1?! Not very accurate. Nb4 is good now and the white pieces lose coordination.

17... Nb4 Now after Ba5 Anand is a little better.

18.Qc4 Ba5 is essential

18... Ba5 Leko has to fight for equality with Nc3

19.Nc3 Bxa4 Anand's pieces are more active, but the position will soon equalize. Leko has no weaknesses.

20.Rxa4 d5 21.Qf1 Nc6 After 22.Bd2 the position is equal and almost simmetrical, so a draw was agreed. Anand's preparation was good and he had no problems in this game. Leko's inaccuracy on move 17 made everything very easy for him.
